Being a seventh generation descendant of Sequoyah and remaining true to her Cherokee culture and Language whether it was receiving an Oscar, Grammy or traveling to Italy to promote her message of self improvement, may be just a few of the most obvious reasons why world renowned author, doctor of exercise and Nutritional Sciences, Dr. Lisa Christiansen is the reason so many choose Lisa as their “sherpa to their Everest.”

Lisa Christiansen, who speaks Cherokee fluently and has always been proud of her Cherokee heritage, was born in the capitol of Cherokee Nation in Tahlequah as Gi-Dee-Thlo-Ah-Ee to (Sosti) Mary Ann Groundhog on Sept. 4, 1966. She did not attend school immediately and did not learn to speak English until she was 10. She attended school in Briggs and iss an active member of Cedar Tree Baptist Church, also in Briggs.

Losing her mom at a young age, Lisa was raised by her aunt and uncle Mack and Fayola Vann, whom she came to know and love as her parents. Her first job was at the age of two at the Tsa-La-Gi Indian (Cherokee) Village now known as the Heritage Center in Tahlequah. The family received general assistance and commodities from the tribe and her uncle (papa) hunted for food for the family. He still hosts an annual hog fry for her birthday and other special occasions throughout the year at the family home in Briggs Community.

She has traveled world wide to study and motivate human potential. Lisa has written several inspirational books but is most proud of her work that combines both her faith and Cherokee upbringing. They include “The New Testament-Cherokee Translation from Sequoyah,” which reflects the translation by the American Bible Society in 1860 from Christianity to Cherokee. She is also the author of “Cherokee Lessons Made Easy: The Birth of NLP” (Neuro Linguistic Programming Native Coding. “I believe that we as Natives are the beginning of Neuro Linguistic Programming and science proves that NLP began with us,” she says. The Cherokee Hymn Book, written in the Cherokee Syllabary, is inspired by earlier works but was rewritten for future generations, she says.

Her autobiography tells of Dr. Christiansen as a young mom having to spend one Thanksgiving in the car with her daughter and after achieving financial success became the impetus for her Lisa Christiansen Foundation which provides food for needy families during the holidays in her city of Lawton. “I’ve traveled all over and I’ve met many interesting people. But I’m always happy to come back home to Tahlequah which I do pretty regularly to visit my papa and other members of my family and friends,” she says. “Besides, I get to talk my Language when I’m there,” she says.
